(I didn't have to do this when I upgraded to 4.8.2 on the 32-bit system.)

system after a very recent update to KDE 4.8 I had the same problem, and
found that one-time positively selecting the desired desktop environment
cured it. In lay terms I guessed that the update had "lost" the default
in some way. Stranger things have happened!
