Interestingly enough I do not recall this issue with 11.0 on my machine.

Will 12.0 automatically show up as an update in the updates repo for 12.1?

If yes, I'll wait for a couple of days.

BTW, I have noticed that if I am patient enough thunderbird will 
eventually recover and get out of its funky state. It will then operate 
as expected for a while before re-entering "Neverland".
