Hi George,
I run GNOME so I can't answer all of your questions, but there are some
settings I always make in YaST2's /etc/sysconfig editor
'System' -> 'Cron'
TMP_DIRS_TO_CLEAR /tmp /var/tmp
CLEAR_TMP_DIRS_AT_BOOTUP yes
There are some related 'fine tuning' settings in the same area but I
don't use them. These specific two help to keep /tmp and /var/tmp from
inadvertently filling up my '/' partition in the background and
triggering other problems.
hth & regards,
Carl

What are these other sets, why does it have the suffix 112 instead of
the hostname, and is it a good idea to clear the files out of those
directories as well?
