DHCP doesn't use zone files either.
It used DDNS.

We've established that your forward zone has one and only one entry in
the file, that of the server.  But when you're up and running with the
Windows machines there are the forward records for them.  This can only
as a result of something - SAMBA ... whatever - injecting the
appropriate RRs into the zone of the live DNS server with the DDNS
protocol.  I'm sure if you ran a network sniffer you'd see that happening.

But nsupdate (or whatever) can't itnroduce RRs to a zone that isn't
there.  You have to have the basic zone set up and the DNS server aware
of it in order to be able to inject RRs into it.

Try running nsupdate by hand ...



We're not talking "files" here for other than initialization.
