I was really hopeful, and renamed the directory. When opening firefox it recreated a new directory and did everything it was supposed to do. All my add-ons were gone and bookmarks (as expected for making a new profile). Unfortunately, no change on trying to load the page in question. The text is still missing.
This definitely points to a problem in your firefox user profile - if you
close firefox, rename ~/.mozilla (to ~/.mozilla.bak for example) and re-open
firefox, can you then see the missing text?
