I am more confused than ever...... :-( .

I just 'switched on' vlc by accident, instead of xine, to watch TV and 
just as "a dare", as a "throw away line" so to say, I switched Desktops 
to prove what happened last night, which I wrote about above.

Lo and behold, and 'cut off my arms and call me Venus'[$$], there was no 
loss of sound!

There WERE some updates to vlc this morning (my time). So something 
there got vlc to behave re the sound as it did in the past.
