There WERE some updates to vlc this morning (my time). So something there got vlc to behave re the sound as it did in the past.

Ahh, sounds a lot better :-) . I'll try it later.
(But the "up" still worries me: I have forgotten what zypper does with
varying version numbers and with v1.9.99 already installed I wonder what it
will do with its v1.1.13? I'll find out later :-) .)
as default zypper will not change repos, but ....
you may even have to do:
zypper rm vlc
zypper in --from<packman-repo> -D vlc
Well, I decided to try the above before going to bed. Silly me......
The version from videolan got deleted and the one from packman (v1.1.13) was installed.
However, vlc would not run - which is what I always get when I first install an oS distro [#] :-( .
So I re-installed vlc from videolan - and it immediately sprung into life and I had digital TV back again :-) (albeit without sound when I switch to another Desktop as wot prompted my original post).
As the Lone Ranger would say, "I don't think we're in Texas anymore, Tonto" when he also tried to use vlc from packman :-D .
[#] I cannot explain it, but, as I already stated, vlc installed in 12.2 Milestone 1 works as expected - and it isn't installed from videolan.org. The mysteries of computing, eh? :-(
I just 'switched on' vlc by accident, instead of xine, to watch TV and just as "a dare", as a "throw away line" so to say, I switched Desktops to prove what happened last night, which I wrote about above.
