Have you run into: https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=275469 and
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=292057 while using KDE4.8?  As
soon as I installed from the Upstream repo, I ran smack into these
bugs and the Task Manager and even Panel became completely unusable.
So much so, I had to roll back to KDE4.7.4 (where the bug is only a
minor annoyance vs completely breaking things like it does in KDE4.8).

You say you didn't run into any unresolvable issues... Are you using a
different Qt build/version? The default one for 12.1? Anything else?
How did you work around the bug? Or if you haven't seen it, I'd be
interested in what is different between your and my KDE4.8 installs.

i've never seen these two bugs on my system; neither with KDE 4.7 nor 4.8.
i've been using KDE/Distro:/Factory until some time ago, but switched to
KDE/Release:/47 shortly after oS 12.1 came out, and now to Release:/48

following is my hard- and software details; please tell me if there's
anything else you'd like to know:

i'm using 3 KDE repos at present:

http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/KDE:/Release:/48/openSUSE_12.1/
http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/KDE:/Extra/KDE_Release_47_openSUSE_12.1/
http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/KDE:/Unstable:/Playground/KDE_Release_48_openSUSE_12.1/

apart from that i have quite a few additional repo.s enabled which may or
may not influence things in KDE (listed at the end).

[snip]

There are minor differences in our hardware and repo list.. but not
that many (you have education and a couple of user repos that I don't
have)

The odd thing is... on every release of KDE since KDE4.6 on all
machines (various laptops/desktops and in VirtualBox as well) I've
installed it on (using openSUSE releases/repos) has had an
issue/regression with the Task Manager. Since KDE4.6.x, it manifests
itself as an app that remains as a "button" on the Task Manager after
you've exited the app. it's a hit/miss whether the app remains after
closing, and usually after either opening another app, or
opening/closing the KMenu the Task Manager is refreshed. it's not a
show stopper, just an annoyance.

With my install of KDE4.8 from the Upstream repo it got worse.. a LOT
worse. Not only do app "ghosts" remain behind on the Task Manager,
some apps never show up there while they are running. Plus, and this
is where the usability died on me, the whole Panel becomes
unresponsive to clicks... for 30 seconds (up to about 90 seconds) at a
time. Any click I do during that period seem to queue up, and when
the panel "wakes up" everything I clicked on happens all at once.

I gave up on KDE4.8 and rolled back to KDE4.7.4 to get a usable
desktop back. The bugs have been reported... by others... what I find
really odd is... some people are not seeing this.. yet I see it on
every machine I've installed it on over the weekend. I haven't tested
in VirtualBox yet - maybe tonight. I've got to wonder... why some
people see it and others don't.

I'll look closer at the repo differences we have... see if I can spot
it. From what I read, it's a QT thing.. maybe you've got a newer QT
than I do? I'm using 4.8.0.245.1 (comes from my KDE4.7.4 Factory
install)....
