Hi everyone, on my 12.1 box, every 5 minutes the syslog daemon generates entries in /var/log/messages like that: Jan 15 09:32:50 klops dbus-daemon[1177]: **** CHANGING /sys/devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:11.0/host0/target0:0:0/0:0:0:0/block/sda Jan 15 09:32:50 klops dbus-daemon[1177]: **** UPDATING /sys/devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:11.0/host0/target0:0:0/0:0:0:0/block/sda Jan 15 09:32:50 klops dbus-daemon[1177]: **** EMITTING CHANGED for /sys/devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:11.0/host0/target0:0:0/0:0:0:0/block/sda Jan 15 09:32:50 klops dbus-daemon[1177]: **** CHANGED /sys/devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:11.0/host0/target0:0:0/0:0:0:0/block/sda Jan 15 09:32:50 klops dbus-daemon[1177]: **** CHANGING /sys/devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:11.0/host2/target2:0:0/2:0:0:0/block/sdb Jan 15 09:32:50 klops dbus-daemon[1177]: **** UPDATING /sys/devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:11.0/host2/target2:0:0/2:0:0:0/block/sdb Jan 15 09:32:50 klops dbus-daemon[1177]: **** EMITTING CHANGED for /sys/devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:11.0/host2/target2:0:0/2:0:0:0/block/sdb Jan 15 09:32:50 klops dbus-daemon[1177]: **** CHANGED /sys/devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:11.0/host2/target2:0:0/2:0:0:0/block/sdb Jan 15 09:32:50 klops dbus-daemon[1177]: **** CHANGING /sys/devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:14.1/host4/target4:0:0/4:0:0:0/block/sdc Jan 15 09:32:50 klops dbus-daemon[1177]: **** UPDATING /sys/devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:14.1/host4/target4:0:0/4:0:0:0/block/sdc Jan 15 09:32:50 klops dbus-daemon[1177]: **** EMITTING CHANGED for /sys/devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:14.1/host4/target4:0:0/4:0:0:0/block/sdc Jan 15 09:32:50 klops dbus-daemon[1177]: **** CHANGED /sys/devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:14.1/host4/target4:0:0/4:0:0:0/block/sdc Jan 15 09:32:50 klops dbus-daemon[1177]: **** CHANGING /sys/devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:14.1/host4/target4:0:0/4:0:0:0/block/sdc Jan 15 09:32:50 klops dbus-daemon[1177]: **** UPDATING /sys/devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:14.1/host4/target4:0:0/4:0:0:0/block/sdc Jan 15 09:32:50 klops dbus-daemon[1177]: **** EMITTING CHANGED for /sys/devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:14.1/host4/target4:0:0/4:0:0:0/block/sdc Jan 15 09:32:50 klops dbus-daemon[1177]: **** CHANGED /sys/devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:14.1/host4/target4:0:0/4:0:0:0/block/sdc This is annoying. sd{a,b,c} are my local harddisks. I want the messages in file /var/log/dbusdaemon instead. So I looked at /etc/rsyslog.conf and built my rule in /etc/rsyslog.d/dbus.conf: if ($programname startswith 'dbu') or \ ($syslogtag startswith 'dbu') \ then -/var/log/dbusdaemon & ~ The first part works, I have the messages in /var/log/dbusdaemon. But I still have them in /var/log/messages. Why? The include statement in /etc/rsyslog.conf is above the directive to put everything except mail and news into /var/log/messages (I use the standard rsyslog.conf as installed, except that mail.* messages go into one file). Do I have to add an additional line like :msg, contains, "/sys/devices/pci0000:00/0000" ~ to /etc/rsyslog.conf, like the samples in the wiki of rsyslog.com do? If so, what is the benefit of using a config dir instead of pressing everything into /etc/rsyslog.conf? Maybe I can turn those messages completely off (I don't know about dbus), but I still wonder why the messages are going into /var/log/messages.
