Hmmm... I just logged out and back in, and I see the same double entry
in the list of WMs (I only use KDE at the moment - haven't got around
to installing other WMs since updating to 12.1). This is on a vanilla
install of 12.1 with only KDE, but updated to Factory. I also have a
laptop with a similar config, but running 100% default.. I'll check it
too when I've got a chance.
Basically... I see the same, but since I only log into KDE, i have
never had the chance to try the other KDE choice.
That should have been created on the first startup of KDE... the fact
it was missing might be an artifact of launching the broken KDE first.

Thanks. It's working now.
What was the problem in the end? The steps you outlined at the
beginning are what is documented here:
http://en.opensuse.org/SDB:KDE_install so if there's something
missing, or something misleading, we should find out what and update
the page.
In my login screen there are 2 KDE Workspace session options, when I click
on one -- I get the white screen and nothing works there. When I select the
other one it works. I don't know why there are two options. If there is
anyway we can find I am willing to assist.

Also there was no default panel or Folder view enabled by default. I had to
create the two. I don't know if that should happen.
