Private mail is that, off-list, and list mail is on list which we read. There is really no need for another email, unless the poster *specifically* requests it.
I personally wish the netiquette was updated to do the opposite. I know this specific list has people that are bothered by seeing the same email come in from both the sender and from the list. But on the lkml lists as an example is very much against netiquette to not do a reply-all. That allows people to setup filters to highlight emails in conversations in which they are participating, but to leave other conversations grouped in their low-priority list mailbox. This list as an example has enough traffic it would be nice to have 2 folders setup, one for conversations I'm not part of and one for those I am part of.
