Well when I googled I found http://docs.kde.org/stable/en/kdebase-workspace/kdm/configuring-kdm.html As you said, distributions can put stuff where they want: $KDEDIR can be /usr or /etc But I want to emphasise this passage: Since kdm must run before any user is logged in, it is not associated with any particular user.
