Same goes for setting aside 15% of the SSD for "spare" space.
Many/most SSD manufacturers already do this, so as a user you should
be able to just use whatever you see as available space and not worry
about it.

I have a "recent" SSD; a Micron Crucial RealSSD C300 bought with a
Thinkpad T420s.

Crucial is, according to my Net research, one of the reliable SSD
suppliers. It is well received on most major hardware comparison sites.

But it doesn't set aside 15%, it sets aside 5%. So I added another
10% by my own. This was safety measurements triggered by experience
of friends who do enterprise storage SSD deployments (in the
100,000s units) for a living. Up to now, I trusted the guys who
plan storage deployments for millions of (virtual= servers... ;-)

Do you have hard evidence that this is not needed? Can you post
links to measurements or experience reports? Both my friends and I
would be interested to see it. (On a personal note: There is not
much disk space left on my laptop with SSD disks. I don't use -o
discard owing to reliable performance degradition reports, but use
fstrim in a cron job.)
