Your mileage may vary but before allowing Add-ons to be updated by the Add-ons Checker in Thunderbird do a backup of your ~/.thunderbird directory. For the second time now (a few minutes ago and yesterday) all my Extensions and Appearance add-ons were wiped when I allowed an Extension to be updated. To recover I had to overwrite the corrupted Extensions directory in .thunderbird/defaultxxxxxx with the one from yesterday's backup to get them all back. This is on 12.1 with KDE4.7.3 and Thunderbird 8.0. (I don't know if the same would occur with Firefox 8.0.)
