Enigmail 1.3.3 works with Thunderbird 8. And the openSUSE package for
Thunderbird 8 also contains that. So what is your issue exactly.
(Enigmail 1.3.3 has a few regressions but the basics work for me)

couldn't complete, as it didn't accept the location of gpg that I gave
it, namely /usr/bin/gpg

In fact, it is also complaining that enigmime service is not available.

I can't find that in YaST > Runlevel services. What am I missing?
