Thunderbird keeps several draft copies as you write, which are marked as
deleted but not actually deleted. The actual delete happens when the folder
is compacted, I think, which may not happen in the same session. Deleted
emails are not seen with TB, I see them if I look at that folder with Pine.

In your case you interrupted the writing, I'm not sure if that makes a
difference.
