AFAIK, google offers IMAPS. your firewall needs to be opened to allow access on tcp port 993. See if thats set. Also on Kmail 3.5.x (using KDE3.5), When setting up the imap account, it lists options to show Server side subscribed folders, local subscribed folders. By default both of these are not selected and the result is an account without at imap folders. Select Serverside subscribed folders and it will show the imap folders that are created in gmail.
That was it! I needed to show server side subscribed folders. That was all I needed to do. I didn't know what that was before, so I had just left it alone, but now I can read my IMAP email. Thanks!!
