   Sounds like kmail is not talking out IMAPS -- google's IMAP is IMAPS 
(just like HTTP/HTTPS, there's IMAP/IMAPS),
and they use different ports (143/993)...but usually the port is 
selected automatically based on whether
you use secure IMAP or not...
