George, I have had a similar problem with kmail using pop3.  Although the 
settings appear normal, the only thing that has helped is to go into the 
settings and at each dialog window in send and receive I would delete forward 
and backward all that's in that window then reinter the same info.  Then 
miraculously it worked again.

I surmise that there is some invisible character that has gotten into one of 
the entry windows, but have no way to prove it.  I haven't been able to 
identify any particular event that creates the problem.

When I run Thunderbird I never have that problem.   Before I get bit by the 
Kmail2 gremlins, I'm going back to Tbird.
