There are 3 things you should do to handle fonts:
1) as an ex-MS user you can import the fonts used there into your installation; or you can, using the Software Manager, import the fonts;
2) in Gecko>System Settings>Application Appearance>Fonts set the fonts you want to use and also set the Anti-Aliasing properties;
3) in Thunderbird, use Edit>Preferences>Display>Advanced to set the fonts you want.
Keep in mind that some fonts are designed to appear better in PRINT (on a printer) and NOT on a monitor's screen. You can look at what these are by looking up the wikipedia or doing a <shudder> "google".
I can give you a list of the fonts which I use as a starting point if you ask me (and I'll send you this in private mail).
TB will import this mail.
However, I am not totally sure about the calendar etc which you mention directly below although I do believe that there are extensions for TB available which will do this.

Hey to all,
I am just looking for opinions from people that have used these programs, and how you might compare them. I am using thunderbird right now, but I find it very difficult to configure the GUI fonts.
I should have answered this earlier.

At the same time, I really like the ability to keep messages from the same thread together in my inbox or other folders, and thunderbird is far superior to outlook's handling of this.
I am migrating over from MS Outlook, and would like to import all my old email,

besides my calendar, tasks, and address book. I started using thunderbird only because I am moderately familiar with it.
Any advice, and info on common problems you may have encountered, would be most helpful.
Thanks
George
