I just did my periodic 11.4 system update through YaST2. On a reboot, although the logging shows that level 5 has been reached, I do not get a login screen. I get a login prompt.
I can login as root. A startx brings up KDE, etc. OK. If I logout to change user, I am back to the login prompt.
Though I've run into this several times on various machines lately, I don't know if I ever figured out what causes it. It could be due to a change made in /etc/sysconfig, either DISPLAYMANAGER= in displaymanager, or DEFAULT_WM= in windowmanager. Check if either of these files got current timestamps during your updates.
I can login as myself. But startx fails due to a missing file or something (I can't see at the moment). The only way to use my stuff is by 'ssh -l' to localhost.
There was a security policy implemented to prevent startx as normal user. To work around this new limitation, remove the comment from the last line in /etc/permissions.local and then run SuSEconfig to update the permissions to permit setuid on /usr/bin/Xorg.
head: cannot open `/etc/X11/xorg.conf' for reading: No such file or directory SaX2 generated xorg.conf not available!
But I thought SaX2 was dead.
There are pieces of SaX2 left in a legacy package, but I don't know what good it/they are any more. -- "The wise are known for their understanding, and pleasant words are persuasive."
