Can I be sure ntp knows that my 2 hour time difference on the hardware clock is correct and not an error? Remember that the hardware clock is UTC time.
As Carlos explained, ntp doesn't know anything about hardware clock. The CMOS hardware clock's clock, time is transferred by boot.clock to the system hardware clock. ntpd only works with the system hardware clock, not with the battery-buffered CMOS hardware clock.
And we do not all live in that timezone.
Per and I are from Europe as well, and it works at our installations.
It also works for all my systems that are permanently attached to the network where the time server lives. My issue is with system where that is not the case.
