I then tried the rpm way of installing - and this failed because of some dependency problem :-( .
"Great way of getting things done", I thought. Then went and downloaded the tar.bz2 file from Mozilla and installed FF 5 manually.
Hi Basil; You somewhat confuse the issue by mixing 64 and 32 bit versions together. Also, be aware that beta and factory repos contain programs that are likely to contain errors and missing dependencies. If/when that occurs, file a bug report about it and the situation will likely be remedied with a few days. Nor do I**think that *I* need to make any bug report about anything. You don't have to. But above you have complained about something which "failed" and something which "failed because of some dependency problem". So if you think it should be fixed you probably should open a bugreport. If you don't care, you don't need to bother but then I'm wondering why your mail reads like you are complaining about something.
I hadn't complained about anything. All I did was to comment about what I experienced. Is this now forbidden to be done in this mail list, or any other list dealing with openSUSE, without it being considered to be a "complaint" and an attack on the distro?!
Someone posted his/her experience about trying to install Firefox 5 which failed. I guess my answer to Andi was fast enough and correct.
Forgive me, Wolgang, but what answer to Andi, which was fast enough, are you talking about? I have not seen such an answer. Was it a private message to him which did not make it to this mail list? I can't see it in the archives for this mail list. Perhaps I am not looking in the right place (more than likely, of course)?
So I could ask why you answered with something completely different? Did you want to have an answer to your issue?
For chrissake, I was only making a comment about what I experienced! I wasn't complaining. I solved the problem I was faced with. I simply stated how I solved the problem I was confronted with.
It's pretty easy: mozilla:Factory is absolutely not meant to provide backports. The packages there are meant for inclusion into Factory. For backports there is mozilla for stable versions and mozilla:beta for beta versions (and mozilla:legacy for old unmaintained versions). Also without posting any error message it's not possible to do anything beyond that. So Basil, please, if you want to have something fixed, please provide proper information. It's fine if you do that on this list.
Nobody asked that person to submit a bug report about his problem. Because there is no bug and he got his answer within 30 minutes.
Wolfgang
Jeeeesus, how many more people don't make comments about anything in any of these opensuse mail list when they come across such confrontational comments? :-( Have we now reached the situation where saying, "BOO!" is regarded as a some sort of a personal attack on whoever thinks they may have a "guilty conscience"? Come on. Let's just take a deep breath, relax, look at the seagulls flying over the beach as you lie on the sand in the warm sun looking up at the blue sky......
