All this was from the RPMS, not the direct install. This is why I am confused about the apparent mess. I now think I have this sorted. Sort of. Perhaps the confusion is that there are two libGL. One in /usr/lib, and one in /usr/X11R6/lib. Which is for the server, or a client app, or for a specific card, or a general software implementation is a bit unclear to me.
