This is why I suggested the myfi's they are truly amazing devices takes all the hassle away. If the laptop has broadcom wireless and works well then go to the 3 store and sort out a myfi like I said I too gave up on mobile broadband sticks they just kept disconnecting on me or wouldn't authenticate with the network. I have a mobile broadband stick here dunno what brand it is but maybe I will test it for you. Now though my laptop keeps dropping the wifi network and then refusing to authenticate if I try to reconnect!! Its not the myfi as it does it on CampusRoam regularly - laptop battery is dead and the laptop keyboard is also I guess even the hd has errors just counting down 8 months till its paid and I can get a new one!! It depends on what brand of modem he is using I personally use a myfi from 3 as its easier to connect via wifi to mobile broadband.
They cost about 40 quid and can be paired with 4 wifi devices at one time.
Huwaiee mobile broadband dongles I haved used with knetworkmanager before but zte ones I have never got them to work.
