wrote: I just installed 11.4 with KDE (clean install, 32-bit version, off the DVD), and installed vlc which is my preferred choice as a multimedia application (for TV viewing, DVD viewing, capturing TV programs).
However vlc will simply not start - the cursor bounces around but no vlc. [pruned]
When I tried to run VLC from the root shell, I've got an error message clearly saying it should not run as a root.
Same here.
In my case VLC (from Packman) under 11.4/KDE4 fails with "Floating point exception".
Yes.....I seem to recall that there was such an error statement showing up (about the floating point thingie)....
Googling revealed very strange workaround: run it under strace.
strace vlc works.
Hmmmm...I'll try this. Thanks for this.
*BUT* *WHY* should anyone even have to do this when vlc works perfectly in the gnome environment, for chrissake!?

OK, just tried this.....and it works: I now get moving pictures on the screen from vlc. But now to have to get the damn sound working! Moving pictures but no sound. Pulseaudio is an ABOMINATION! So now, if I want to continue to run openSUSE 11.4 with KDE, I need to alter the run parameters for vlc.....luvly, *not*. Way to go, KDE!
