When I an writing this message, the error seems to be relayed to the mouse. But most of the time it has been about enabling 3D. I have all desktop effects disabled globally. So I do not know if there were two problems or a common underlying problem introduced.
I have found the other message: Failed to initialize the 3D engine Failed to allocate 3D objects This is in the X server log when the graphics system becomes unresponsive. It is written each time the unresponsive behavior occurs (and the CPU usage goes to 100%). And as I write, occasionally this causes the server to crash. But 9 out of 10 times it is just the temporary (10 seconds) freezing and these messages.
