The Gnome panel thing is probably related to a Compiz bug that has been fixed.

The missing icons... do you mean in the Application Browser view?

The disappearing Add/Remove Software - are you familiar with openSUSE
and the add software tool? (I ask because you say you're running on
Ubuntu 10.10 as your Host).  The default behavior of the Software tool
is to exit after installing software.  You can change this behavior by
opening YaST and selecting System > /etc/sysconfig Editor.  In the
editor, select System > Yast2 > GUI > PKGMGR_ACTION_AT_EXIT and set it
to restart or summary (depending on your own preferences).
