Well, on my 11.x boxes, and I don't care what windows does, when I put in the media and close the tray manually, all that appears to happen is KDE is notified and I get a popup window that lets me choose what to do. Unless I select something to do, the media is NOT mounted. So it's more than an "EITHER-OR" situaltion.
In KDE4 there is a systemsettings module for removeable media. AFAIK the default is to not mount automatically the first time a media was inserted but only after the user did so once manually by clicking on the device in the pop- up or dolphin. Not sure if this is for USB only though but I do not think so.
Yes, I've seen that settings module. It's set to it's default. When I insert media, I get the pop-up. If I do nothing, df tells me it's NOT mounted. If I stop the haldeamon, "/etc/init.d/haldeamon stop" I get no KDE pop-up, yet udisks-deamon still seems to unmount it out from under me in the middle of the script. Even when I do "udisks --inhibit-polling /dev/sr0" and hal is stopped it gets unmounted out from under me???
