FWIW I was able to reproduce this behaviour with a vanilla 11.2 in Virtualbox upgraded to 4.5.5 from KDE:Release:45. I get a black screen whether or not Virtualbox had 3D acceleration enabled. Disabling compositing in kwinrc resolved the issue. I don't know yet why kwin didn't fallback to 2D itself.
I don't have time to troubleshoot further today, it's 11.4RC1 checkin deadline for me and I am preparing for FOSDEM (And KR45 packages are so not on the list of things I'm supposed to maintain!).
You have helped a lot already. Glad you could reproduce it. Misery loves company! My attempt failed because I used the tag Composting instead of Compositing. kwriteconfig just happily added a new section called Composting. Which of course had no effect. After I corrected that, things are working again.
So it seems the fallback to 2D did not happen automatically. If it makes a difference, it is the radeon driver from the X11:/XOrg OBS repo.
Thanks ever so much for the help! One less problem caused by my visit!
The kmail maintainer looked at https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=265293 within a few hours and pointed out the commit to backport to 4.5 to fix the GL capabilities check. I have added this to KDE:Release:45. Please test, but not on production systems first!
