Well bu=it the bullet and updated my 11.3 install to KDE 4.5 from the repo  
and yes it works  the PIM still sucks compared with the old version in kde3.5 
(dont bite me freakin head of just a comment) BUT  the icons in this 4.5 are 
to put it mildly prety rubbish white things almost just out lines   i did read 
something a while ago about that but cant find it now   what is the trick to 
get things back to the settings i had on 4.4.4
