Pete, you are absolutely correct - I haven't had to compile the driver 
from nVidia for some time and so have forgotten this step (init3) 
followed by step init5.  Thanks for the reminded and correction.

(However, remember that if you tried doing it the way I said you would 
get an error message stating that one needs to go init3 before compiling 
the driver.)
