sorry, i didn't get this before: you are able to run nvidia-settings, adjusting
your video display. but you can't save the file, even though there's a button
that says "save to xorg.conf" or something like that. is that correct?

if yes, you'll have to start nvidia-settings as root, i.e., open a terminal,
type
"su" and give your root password. _then_ start nvidia-settings from that
terminal
and you'll be able to save the file. reason: files under /etc/x11/ can be
changed
only by root.
