I'm having trouble getting a dialup modem to connect from a Dell laptop running Opensuse 11.2 ---need it on vacation where there is no DSL or cable.. I run kppp from command line as root (to be sure permissions are not an issue). Configure both the modem (an external US Robotics 56K "Speedster" which is leftover from Unix days before DSL), and the ISP info in the screens provided. The modem is connected by a USB-to-Serial cable, and appears as /dev/ttyUSB0. Then run "Connect". Modem dials, ISP answers, modem goes through the hand-shaking, and establishes a connection -- which the debug window of kppp shows (CONNECT50666/ARQ). Then error message pops up in the command line window: Opener: received Set Secret Opener: received Set Secret Opener: received OpenDevice Opener: received ExecPPPDaemon kernel supports ppp alright In parent: pppd pid 6920 Couldn't find interface ppp0: No such device. It hangs at that point. Suggestions? I also tried configuring the modem in Yast -- kppp runs with the same result whether or not the modem is configured in Yast. I could not figure a way to dial it (after Yast configuration) except with kppp, so if there is an alternative, I'd be grateful to know it. Details: modem is turned on before booting computer. Dell Inspirion 17, Intel Core duo T6600 Opensuse 11:2, x86_64, patches up to date (I think) KDE 4.3.5 kppp version 2.4.0 In the kppp configuration I have not added a manual login sequence, nor added any custom ppp parameters.
