The Device Notifier should be there in the bottom bar/panel by default (looks like a monitor on a stand). In 4.4 it's merged into the systray. Prior to the latest 4.4, it should be found (default location on openSUSE) on the left of the panel near the desktop pager. If it's missing, you removed it, or something else went wrong with your install or updates. Regardless, as Michael said, you can add it back as he described.
It's there. Clicking on it opens the small window that appears aanyway automatically when I insert the USB stick.
When the stick is present, the window contains an icon for it, and a name for the volume. When I over on this, there appears under this is, in a smaller font, "2 actions for this device". Clicking there brings up the screen that, in kde3, would appear automatically (Open window, Do nothing, etc). I do not see a way to learn what the second available action might be, but I suppose it would be Eject.
Ummm... if you haven't mounted the USB stick, there's nothing to "eject" or unmount... so... there is no option to unmount a device that's not mounted. If you mount the USB stick.. ie open it in Dolphin... then you can unmount it as I described.
So the problem remains: How can I eject the stick? How also can I remove the extra Device Notifier windows that seem permanently displayed, whether or not any device is present. If the Device Notifier is malfunctioning, which seems likely, how can I repair it, short of reinstalling v11.2 from scratch.
There's nothing to repair.... it just sounds like you're just trying to use it to do something that cannot be done.. unmount/eject an unmounted device. Where did you add all the other device notifiers? If you unlock the widgets, you can right-click on any panel object or desktop widget and remove it. As well.... all desktop widgets, when in the unlocked state have a slide out tab that has an X on it... I didn't learn all this stuff from reading anything... I just tried it.. right-click is an obvious choice on almost any OS... 99% of the time, it's fairly logical if you don't over think it so much. Look for the simple and obvious... the thing that isn't so clear is how to move objects in the panel.... but you've already discovered that in a previous email thread.
And as an aside, this widget (even were it to be working properly) seems to me to be vastly inferior to the version in my laptop, in which an icon simply appears on the desktop, and its menu offers quite a few options.
It's not inferior... just different... and once you start using it, you can see its benefits. Sure it might have a few minor drawbacks, but overall it keeps everything nice and neatly packaged.
