What "STARTMODE=???" should I use? Currently I have "hotplug".
I have always had good luck with 'on boot' for the wifi settings. Then I use wpa_passphrase to set up my normal 3-4 wireless networks in wpa_supplicant.conf they are tried in order they appear in the file. You can also set the priority inside each of the network blocks in wpa_supplicant.conf. Then I can roam easily between the configured networks. I haven't traveled in a while with my laptop, but IIRC, it connects fine at hotels, etc.. If not, iwlist solves the problem. This is with an Atheros card, so ymmv :p
"On boot" works, well, on booting, of course. I want more :-) I'll expand a bit the info. The laptop is a Compaq CQ61. The wifi is "Atheros AR9285 Wireless Network Adapter (PCI-Express)", and I'm fortunate that it works out of the box (I looked around and asked a bit before shopping). I only use one wifi network, at home; when out I don't need/use network (I write this email while off-line). I haven't investigated what I would need in order to use a different wifi network without deleting my current config, but I don't have a wifi when out, so I have no pressing need for that, anyway. So, when I get back home I power up my adsl router, press the little "wifi" button on the laptop, it lights in a nice blue, blinking red sometimes, but I have to issue "rcnetwork restart" to actually make it work. What I would love is having that command run (or equivalent) when I change that button state. I wonder if one of the possible "startmode" setting would make it work automatically. - -- Cheers / Saludos, Carlos E. R.
