The only time I here sound is at boot time and at shutdown; on those
occasions, the volume depends on the setting of the volume control in the
panel, so apparently the sound card works. There is no sound from websites
or from CDs.
The volume control is at max, and is not muted.
I tried to whether the audio application was not turned on. In the
Launcher, in Applications > Multimedia > Volume Control:
when I tried to open Volume Control there was a message saying that
"Connection Failed".
When I opened Sound Preferences, I saw that nearly all the content is
greyed out, except every occurence of "Install", but clicking on any of
these is ineffective, and does nothing.
When I tried to open Sound MIxer, it timed out and failed to load.
I also tried to find a clue by googling (and there are a lot of such
reports), but did not recongnize anything as helpful.
