Surely not true, else I would not be able to use it on my machine... But indeed I also had major trouble getting the microphone to work. The final solution had been that the capture device is per default off, and you have to activate it: Start alsamixer, press F4 (show capture controls), go to the capture entry and activate it with <space>. After that, go to skype options, select audio and 'default device' for mic, and do a test call - it *should* work. At least for me it does...
