OK, to follow up myself: I solved it by installing disper
(http://willem.engen.nl/projects/disper/), a python tool that supports many
things like cloning, extending resizing etc., but with retaining
compatibility
with xrandr. Highly recommended :-)
Available as a package for at least openSUSE and SLE based products from
the X11:Utilities repository at the openSUSE Build Service.
