The amount of files and directories on an ext3 file system is limited by the available inodes. The remaining free inode count is listed by tune2fs -l /dev/sdXX.

Dunno about ext4, but I suspect it's the same, maybe with an other command than tune2fs.

You can change the inode count when you make the filesystem.
