I ended up purchasing an HP DV7-3085DX due the fact that is was very close in specifications to the other model and a local retailer had one in stock. Installation of 64bopenSUSE 11.2 went very smoothly; everything so far: Video [including 3d], Sound, Wireless, Ethernet, USB, card reader, has "just worked". Installation was straight-forward, booted the first time, added the Nvidia repository using Yast's provided repo list, performed a "zypper up", and the next time I logged in I had hi-res 3d video running compiz. Very impressive; this was even more successful than my last install [a Toshiba P105-S6207 which also went very well, it only had some minor sound quality issues]. Kudos openSUSE, I'm back to work now.
