Depends on the cpu speed. If the cpu is able to compress faster than the 
destination media subsystem
can write, then it is faster to backup with compresssion. You can sometimes 
test with compression ratio.

And comercial backup programs may have such interesting things as forward 
recovery data, so that if
the backup is damaged it can be still retrieved.
