There is no Plasma Icon (cashew) if he previously selected Plain Desktop.

Each desktop can have its own Desktop type.
So you can have folder view (the hopeless jumble of icons) on one desktop
without
making a mess of all desktops. You can have Default view (which allows
widgets) on
some desktops and plain desktops on others.
Personally, I've started to run a Clean desktop. No icons.
I make heavy use of Favorites in the KDE Menu (old style, not the slow new
style).
I've come to appreciate the lack of desktop clutter. Everything is faster.

2. How do I get my desktop back? Somehow I clicked something and the
desktop folder just disappeared.......How can I have a KDE3 style
desktop? On the WHOLE desktop without some stupid config thing on the
side.
In the upper right-hand corner is the Plasma icon. Click on it an select
Desktop Settings (or possibly Plain Desktop Settings).
