I've just used yast to set up a dns server on my computer. I can do ping
and nslookups from the commandline and I have set up a windows xp virtual
machine (using virtualbox) which also has no problem accessing the
internet. However, I find that I cannot use konqueror, the weather report
fails and the update notifier also fails with an unknown host error. It
seems as if KDE4 is not able to use the local DNS or anything else once
the local DNS is active. If I enter the ip address in konqueror then it
finds the site without a problem.

Has anyone else experienced this or know of a solution?

Yes, this is bug https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=473308 . You may
work around it by adding "nameserver 127.0.0.1" to /etc/resolv.conf.

Thanks
