Yuck. Use the correct tools.

Adam, did you read the thread and my posting? It doesn't seem so. puma:~ $ lsusb -t /: Bus 08.Port 1: Dev 1, Class=root_hub, Driver=ehci_hcd/6p, 480M |__ Port 2: Dev 12, If 0, Class=stor., Driver=usb-storage, 480M /: Bus 07.Port 1: Dev 1, Class=root_hub, Driver=uhci_hcd/2p, 12M |__ Port 2: Dev 2, If 0, Class=HID, Driver=usbhid, 1.5M |__ Port 2: Dev 2, If 1, Class=HID, Driver=usbhid, 1.5M /: Bus 06.Port 1: Dev 1, Class=root_hub, Driver=uhci_hcd/2p, 12M |__ Port 1: Dev 4, If 0, Class=vend., Driver=ftdi_sio, 12M |__ Port 2: Dev 5, If 0, Class=HID, Driver=usbhid, 1.5M /: Bus 05.Port 1: Dev 1, Class=root_hub, Driver=ehci_hcd/6p, 480M /: Bus 04.Port 1: Dev 1, Class=root_hub, Driver=uhci_hcd/2p, 12M /: Bus 03.Port 1: Dev 1, Class=root_hub, Driver=uhci_hcd/2p, 12M /: Bus 02.Port 1: Dev 1, Class=root_hub, Driver=uhci_hcd/2p, 12M /: Bus 01.Port 1: Dev 1, Class=root_hub, Driver=uhci_hcd/2p, 12M How do I see in that output that the last insert disk has one partition and that this partition is named sdc1? Come to it, how do I see which is the last attached one if I would have more than one USB storage device? I know my tools, and lsusb ain't one of them if I need to find out the device name for mounting in a rescue system. I stay with my advice -- "dmesg | tail" is the easiest way to find out the device name of a newly plugged in USB storage device in a rescue system. There is no need to get the previous content of /proc/partitions and compare it with the version after plugging in; just calling one command is sufficient.
