Of all the "manage your apps on multiple desktop" schemes out there, the
compiz developers got it right with the "Expo" plugin. All desktops are
active and you can move apps between desktops in the expo view. The
current desktop is highlighted with a configurable level of brightness.
Forget the 4-square, here are your desktops 1-2-3-4:

not compiz, but plasma-desktop on 11.2/m6 is pretty decent :^)
