You also state that, quote: "They can even paint on their desktop with the desktop effects, let it snow, have stars around their mouse cursor, have a small ball jumping all over the desktop, flowers growing if you water them and lots of other fun stuff."
I can't seem to find my way into doing anything of this. Does it work, I have a pretty standard openSuSE11.1/KDE4.1.3 desktop (ersion 4.1.3 (KDE 4.1.3) "release 4.10.4")?
The effects and shortcuts that activate them are in the "all effects tab" within the desktop kcm module, the flower is a google gadget which can be added as applet.
The desktopfolder cannot be brought into focus if another window is just partly over it. Quite annoying...Can this behaviour be changed?
Because it is not a window. If you want files shown in a window, use a window, e.g. dolphin. It's not different in that respect to KDE3 where the icons on the desktop were not windows either. You can however activate the dashboard which shows all applets.
To sum it up, individual backgrounds, how ?
KDE 4 is at version 4.3, so you need to update to 4.3. If it does not work for you to update, then you have to wait until 11.2 is released.

Remember you can now download a pre-built 11.1 + kde 4.3 live cd and install from that. 4.3 is head and shoulders above 4.1, so I would say your students need to either revert to 3.5 or advance to 4.3, but sticking with 4.1 is not very logical at this point.
