This was a bit surprising. In this rating openSuSE is the
leader in the number of obsolete packages and lag time in packaging. Granted the data underlying the study is not bulletproof, but it does seem to suggest a bit of corporate paralysis. I have no idea of the differences between the ways other distros handle upstream/downstream package movement, but some of the distros shown to do a better job have only a tiny fraction of the resources that openSuSE has. All good info to look at for comparison purposes. Take a look:
One thing to keep in mind is that openSUSE 11.1 was released last year. It will be behind all the other distros that follow a 6 month release cycle.
Ditto, that was my first thought. These counts depend heavily on where you draw the line in the various releases life-cycle.
Also, one must consider, which packages are most popular and/or most used. If the packages they are looking at are not used much, than what's the difference. This is why I strongly dislike (maybe even hate) these kinds of surveys. And, furthermore, I dislike packages like Ubuntu because it's a pain to customize-as-you-are-installing - it reminds me of Microsucks - it installs a "canned" set that you may or may not want. On the other hand, it's easy to install from-the-get-go -- but -- you really don't know what you have and/or what you need before you get started.
