I copied the version numbers, including the parenthesized ones, from Yast's software install. I had an old copy of my whole home directory and replaced everything I could find theme/desktop related and nothing worked. Finally I reinstalled the system and everything works fine with every theme I've tried. I believe where I got into trouble is the "Online Update" Yast program. It updates KDE and other X related things and I believe that it does it inconsistently. With all the "repo" files I have, there are hundreds of upgrades recommended. From now on I'm just going to upgrade software that doesn't require KDE and X related upgrades. Thanks to all who responded. Jim Sven Burmeister wrote:

The KDE4 version is: 4.2.93svn985654-1.3(4.1.3-3.8.9).
Are you sure? 4.2.93 is some beta of KDE 4.3 and not 4.1.3. If plasma crashes, try with a new config and make sure all your KDE packages have the same version as well as the correct Qt version.
