Tried that. 2nd step fails with:

You wrote that you didn't change any Tomcat config so far. Then rm -rf /etc/tomcat6 before installing the package.

Thank you for all responses, but special thanks to you, Joachim. That was exactly what was needed. After your command, I repeated the rpm -e, which was unnecessary, but harmless, then the zypper in tomcat6, which completed successfully this time. Problem solved.
