If you delete first, there is no way for YaST to know that you intend
to install the same thing again (but an older version).

If the deletion is done thru yast, just as the original install was,
when a new install is requested, then yast should be all that is
needed to create / recreate whatever setup is needed, just as it did
the first time. Yast should not remove/modify files that it can not
create or reconfigure properly, no?

Create yes, but "reconfigure properly" no. If you've gone and
configured something for your setup and purpose, and you then
deinstall/delete that software with YaST, how is YaST or the package
manager to know that you really wanted to keep those config files?

pointers to start smbfs would be greatly appreciated.(smb does
report up and running, winbind does start with yast.)

rcsmbfs start

that comes up as "unused".

From reading the init-script, that means that you have no cifs/samba
filesystems in /etc/fstab nor any listed in /etc/samba/smbfstab.
